Unite / T&G Union branch 562 Heathrow
On the 1st of May 2007, Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union joined forces to create the biggest trade union in Britain and Ireland, with a membership of around 2 million. Unite is currently negotiating agreements with unions across Europe to increase its political influence and fight for improved legal rights for workers.
Unite represents over 3,000 BAA workers at Heathrow and thousands more at Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton. Unite is the most influential union in the aviation industry.
Apart from fighting for improved pay and conditions for its members, Unite is currently lobbying the government to act to reduce the appalling number of manual handling injuries in aviation, which is four and a half times the national average. We are also active in promoting protection for young and new workers (including their future pension conditions) and equality of opportunity for all workers.
Joining Unite means a worker doesn't stand alone against a multi-billion pound corporation. When there are accidents and mistakes a company usually tries to place the blame on an individual. Management failings are rarely admitted as the cause. Being part of Unite means that the worker has the support of experienced shop stewards and health and safety representatives, access to free legal advice, and the support of a strong unionised workforce. The more members we have, the stronger our bargaining position. There is also a range of benefits available, including for long term sickness and maternity leave.
